A beloved soap opera actor known to millions has died.

Chris Robinson, perhaps best known for his role as Dr. Rick Webber on “General Hospital,” died June 9 of heart failure in his sleep at his ranch near Sedona, Arizona, Deadline reported. He was 86.

Robinson appeared on “General Hospital” from 1978 to 1986 and was the fictional adoptive father of Laura Spencer, played by Genie Francis.

The story arc involving Laura and Luke Spencer, played by Tony Geary, made the soap opera a massive daytime TV success.

“General Hospital” reached the height of its popularity in 1981, when 30 million viewers tuned in to watch Luke and Laura’s wedding.

Robinson also had his own juicy “General Hospital” subplot when he had an affair with colleague Dr. Monica Quartermaine, played by Leslie Charleson, who died earlier this year.

The fictional Webber came to a gruesome end when Robinson returned to the show for a short stint during which his character was bludgeoned to death in 2002 by Laura’s candlestick-wielding ex-husband, Scotty Baldwin, played by Kin Shriner.

Robinson cemented his place in pop culture in the mid-1980s when he appeared in what became an iconic Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup commercial on television.

To stave off any thoughts that the actor was giving out real medical advice, Robinson said, “I’m not a doctor, but I do play one on TV.”

The self-referential line remains a catchphrase in American culture, but a tax evasion scandal caused Robinson to lose the Vicks endorsement.

In addition to his extensive work on television, including on the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful,” Robinson had roles in feature films such as “The Young Savages” (1961) and “Birdman of Alcatraz” (1962).
